Duke needs more time

Efforts to save a grade II-listed pub on Great Yarmouth's seafront could be thwarted by the short time allocated to a public consultation.

Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust has set aside three hours on Thursday, 29 June from 3.30pm until 6.30pm for a consultation on the future of the Iron Duke, the subject of a long-running campaign to save it as a pub.

The Iron Duke, an art-deco building in Jellicoe Road which has stood empty since 2008, could finally be set for a new lease of life as a burger restaurant, but the campaigners want a pub.

Long-time campaigner Caroline Jones said: “Most people are working at that time. It’s also the day of the Royal Norfolk Show. We don’t know how the meeting will run or be recorded.

"The online survey is very limited but the feedback we are receiving is majority support for the pub being retained as a pub. We want everyone to have their say, so please take part and spread the word. This is a British pub, not an American burger bar. A rare survivor of stunning interwar design.”
