Plans to convert the derelict Iron Duke in Great Yarmouth to an American diner have been shelved, following a consultation.
Now the campaigners say their efforts will be directed to restoring the grade II-listed seafront building as a pub.
The Duke has stood empty since 2008, but the campaigners are convinced the restoration of the former Lacons brewery pub will bring economic growth and tourists to the area.
Campaigner Caroline Jones said: “The Friends of the Iron Duke are thrilled with the news that it is to be faithfully restored and reopened as a pub.
“We hope the Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust will now engage with all interested parties and the wider community keen to be involved. We want to thank everyone who has supported our six-year campaign.
“It would be wonderful to see CAMRA Heritage being involved in the restoration. This is going to be an important project for Great Yarmouth which will make the Iron Duke a destination pub and all year-round venue.
“We think the Lacons brewery’s legacy is an overlooked tool for tourism. A Lacons trail could be created. AW Ecclestone designed lots of pubs in various styles. The brewery was a major employer with more than 300 pubs including 50 in London. It’s an important part of the town’s story and the Iron Duke was built as their flagship pub.
“We are excited about the pub’s future and again none of this would have been possible without the overwhelming support for the Iron Duke.”
