Beer writers Hollie Stephens and David Jesudason are the latest contributors to CAMRA’s award-winning education platform Learn & Discover.
The new articles are:
– What was the Colour Bar? – journalist and campaigner for racial equality David Jesudason unveils the unsavoury history of racial segregation within British pubs. This eye-opening article reveals how Black and Asian pubgoers were forced to drink in a separate room or refused service completely. The thought-provoking piece tells how even US civil rights leader Malcolm X was declined service in a London pub and of the hostile reception received by the first pub landlords of colour.
– Pub snack pairing for beer and cider – ever wondered what to eat with your pint? Hollie Stephens compares complementary tasting notes and flavour profiles for the perfect beer and food pairing. From porters with spicy chilli crackers to medium dry cider with sausage rolls, Hollie’s guide will make you appreciate beer and cider pairings without even having to step foot into the kitchen.

Jesuadon has also pioneered a new initiative to support diversity in beer writing as a director of the British Guild of Beer Writers. The Diversity in British Beer Writing Grant, launched in partnership with Good Beer Hunting, will platform and highlight stories that celebrate diversity and inclusion within beer, pubs, and the wider hospitality industry. In keeping with the spirit of this grant, the guild is particularly interested in hearing from those who are not always well-represented within the broader beer landscape, including women, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ people, and disabled people. They are also welcoming pitches from people who are new to, or seeking a career within, beer writing, brewing, pubs, and the drinks industry at large.
