Under-threat club reopens as community hub

One of Catford’s most cherished landmarks has reopened its doors – not just as a pub, but as a place for people to come together.

Located on the site of the former Catford Constitutional Club, parts of which date back to the 1700s, the building was scheduled for demolition and conversion into flats.

Catford House (above) is being run by Greenwich Cooperative Development Agency (GCDA), a local social enterprise with more than 40 years’ experience creating community-led projects across South East London.

The space offers a welcoming pub and garden plus flexible event areas including the beautifully refurbished Georgian hall, open to the public for the first time in decades.

Catford House will also host a community programme of workshops, events and performances as well as a community kitchen (Spring 2026), creating new opportunities for residents to connect, learn, and celebrate what makes Catford unique.

GCDA chief executive Claire Pritchard said: “Catford House represents a milestone for GCDA. For nearly 15 years we’ve been part of the fabric of Lewisham and securing a permanent home here marks a profound moment for us.

“The former Catford Constitutional Club is a building rich with memory, and by transforming it into the Catford House we’re honouring a historic legacy while building something new for the future.

“Our vision is to create a pub with purpose – a 21st century social club, where good food and good conversation go hand in hand with community action. At a time when so many public spaces are disappearing, we want the Catford House to remain open and accessible to all.

“We hope the Catford House becomes a blueprint for what’s possible when communities take charge of their own spaces and futures. GCDA’s approach is about working with communities, not just in them – listening, learning, and building together. This is just the beginning.”
