GBG brewpub doubles up

An investment of more than £500,000 is being made into the Good Beer Guide-listed Riverhead Brewery Tap in the village of Marsden, Huddersfield.

The project is a collaboration between Ossett brewery and its sister company SALT. Riverhead has been a cask ale haven since 1995 with an on-site brewery producing a wide range of ales including Butterley Bitter.

The involvement of SALT will see craft IPA favourites such as Jute and Huckaback line up alongside nine cask ales. The brewery tap will reopen on 1 March following several weeks of refurbishment.

Work will see the brewery moved to the ground floor, more than doubling the overall footprint of the site as it spreads into the adjacent bank building.

Ossett took Riverhead into its fold of brewpubs in 2009. Last year, SALT also joined Ossett in the successful restoration of the historic Bingley in Horbury Bridge near Wakefield.

Sitting in the centre of Marsden with views across the River Colne, the pub was voted Huddersfield CAMRA branch Pub of the Season Summer 2023 and has been included in the Good Beer Guide for the past 10 years.

The new five-barrel brewhouse will be surrounded by a spacious interior combining the modern design of SALT and the original features of the pub.

Alongside Riverhead and Ossett’s own cask ales, SALT’s award-winning craft beers will be on the bar together with a range of spirits and wines from the Barrique Fine Wines (the group’s wine wholesaler) and on-tap cocktails. West Yorkshire street-food vendor Baobros23 will continue to supply its Asian fare.

Ossett co-owner Jamie Lawson (pictured) said: “Riverhead Brewery Tap has played an important role in the Marsden hospitality scene for many years.

“This investment ensures its place at the heart of the community long into the future. We are also delighted to join forces with SALT after the huge success of the Bingley in Horbury Bridge.”
