Sunderland brewer marks football milestone

On this day in 1973, Sunderland Football Club of the then Second Division defeated the mighty Leeds United 1-0 in the FA Cup final. To mark the 50th anniversary of this event, Sunderland brewery Maxim has released a special pump clip for its Lambton’s cask ale.

Lambton’s was produced at the now defunct Sunderland Vaux brewery between 1997 and 1999 and became the flagship brand for the company. In 1997 the beer was advertised on TV and radio and featured Men Behaving Badly star Neil Morrissey, who subsequently started his own brewery.

Vaux closed on 2 July 1999 with some of the staff setting up Maxim brewery. Almost 10 years later, Maxim announced the revival of the Lambton's, which then became a core product. It appeared at the Great British Beer Festival in 2015 and is described as a smooth 3.8 per cent pale ale, light-coloured and slightly hoppy. It has a blend of Maris Otter malt and Willamette and American Citra hops.

Thanks to Maxim MD Mark Anderson for his help with this article, including the pump clip image.
