Just as pubs are struggling to survive so are social clubs across the country and a fledgling campaign has just secured £2.7m to ensure they survive – and CAMRA members can help its fight.
The 21st Century Social Clubs campaign aims to protect some of Britain’s most valuable community assets.
Social clubs are an important part of Britain’s social and cultural heritage. From traditional working men’s clubs and miners’ welfare institutes to sports and social clubs, they have provided generations of people with somewhere to meet, enjoy a pint, share experiences and build lasting friendships.
But their contribution extends far beyond the bar. Clubs host live entertainment, family celebrations, community events and social activities, often providing an affordable and welcoming space for people who might otherwise experience isolation. They are places where community spirit thrives and local traditions are kept alive.
Yet many clubs face growing challenges, including rising costs, ageing buildings, declining membership and difficulties attracting volunteers. When a club closes, a community loses far more than a building, it loses a valuable meeting place and an important part of its identity.
The 21st Century Social Clubs campaign is working to change this picture. Rather than viewing clubs as relics of the past, it champions them as community assets with an important role to play in the future.
Through practical support, collaboration and campaigning for greater recognition, the initiative is helping clubs become more sustainable, adapt to changing needs and continue serving their communities. Its work also seeks to influence policymakers so that clubs can access the advice, funding and support they need.
In the summer the campaign secured more than £2.7m from the National Lottery for a five-year programme towards strengthening the sector and recognising the wider social value of these organisations.
Why CAMRA should care? There is a natural connection between this campaign and CAMRA’s commitment to protecting Britain’s pub culture and the social benefits of enjoying a drink together.
Many social clubs offer cask beer, support local breweries and provide welcoming places for people to enjoy a pint in a community setting. Their member-led traditions and commitment to serving local people also reflect the values shared by many community pubs.
CAMRA branches can play a useful role by building relationships with clubs, supporting their events, celebrating their achievements and encouraging more people to discover what they offer.
The future of social clubs depends on more than nostalgia. They need new members, committed volunteers, sustainable finances and the confidence to evolve while retaining the qualities that make them special.
The 21st Century Social Clubs campaign is helping make the case that these organisations deserve recognition and practical support. For communities across South Yorkshire and beyond, that message is particularly important, given the historic role clubs have played in working-class life.
So next time you pass your local social club, consider what it contributes to the community. Behind its doors may be friendships, entertainment, mutual support and a sense of belonging that cannot easily be replaced.
Social clubs are more than places to have a pint. They are community assets worth celebrating, supporting and protecting for generations to come.
