Champion Jack doubles up

The team responsible for CAMRA’s 2023 Champion Cask Beer of Norfolk is celebrating another win, this time securing the Society of Independent Brewers Eastern Region top pale ale title.

Moon Gazer Ale, in Hindringham, which brews the winning Cheeky Jack, is now looking forward to it representing the Eastern Region in its 4.5-5 per cent class at national finals hosted by Liverpool next March.

The brewery is run by husband-and-wife team David and Rachel Holliday. David said: “It is very rare for the same beer to hold both titles in the same year, so we are extremely proud that the consistency and quality of Cheeky Jack has been recognised in this way by two very respected organisations.

“We are absolutely thrilled. We always knew it was good but to receive two accolades is great as it means that our peers agree with us.”

The award is judged in a blind tasting by industry professionals and beer experts and is part of an eight-region national competition involving more than 1,000 brewers. The Eastern Region awards covers seven counties, with the category winners each going on to the national finals.

Moon Gazer’s champion pale ale is brewed using Norfolk Maris Otter extra pale which gives it a light golden colour and a sweet, biscuit malt base.

Starring alongside the Norfolk malt is a cocktail of US, New Zealand and UK hops. David said: “We use seven hops in total but all with similar fruit tones, so we create a balanced yet complex beer – and one which we think is balanced and sessionable – no need for in-your-face hops here.

“We wanted to create a rich, satisfying blend of mango, orange, pineapple, and peach flavours but one which also lets the malt come though as well.”

Moon Gazer also received bronze awards for its Nibbler and Scoundrel beers at the event, which was held at Elgood’s brewery, in Wisbech.
