In January 2016, Sally Davies – the Chief Medical Officer for England – announced lower drinking guidelines for men of just 14 units per week. She capitalised on the media coverage to declare that there is ‘no safe level’ of alcohol consumption and that the health benefits of moderate alcohol consumption are ‘an old wives’ tale’.
