Beer Day Britain and Beer Day Northern Ireland, the UK’s annual national brewing celebrations are on 15 June. This year is the event’s 11th anniversary, and it falls on a Monday, a typically quiet day for pubs. Event founder Jane Peyton is encouraging everyone to visit their favourite pub to celebrate Beer Day Britain and support the sector.
Peyton said: “Beer Day Britain is always a fun and positive celebration. In previous years, pubs have marked the occasion with special events, quiz nights, and beer and food-matching menus. Some have even assembled teams to compete in Beer Day Britain’s Got Talent by singing Cheers to Beer, the official anthem.”
The event is a celebration of all beer from mainstream lager to limited-edition craft beer and everything in between no matter where it is brewed – alcohol and no alcohol.
Each year the focus is the National Cheers to Beer toast at 7pm. This simple activity is not only marked across the UK but by beer drinkers around the world who participate each year. The hashtag #cheerstobeer always trends on social media.
Peyton said: “Beer has a supernatural ability to unite people and get the party started. Beer is Britain’s national alcoholic drink so you could say that every day is beer day, but 15 June is an extra special day and one to bring the nation together to say Cheers to Beer!”
She chose the date of 15 June for Beer Day Britain as it is also the date Magna Carta was sealed in 1215. The charter mentions beer in clause 35: “Let there be throughout our kingdom a single measure for wine and a single measure for ale and a single measure for corn...”
Peyton said: “I've already gathered a group of friends to go on a tour of our favourite Brighton pubs on Beer Day Britain and raise a pint and say Cheers to Beer!”
